Market Research-NME (double page spread)

NME's double page spread in this issue is about the 40th of anniversary of Glastonbury Festival. The first page of the magazine which is the first picture has been split into two sections, one half is a picture of a band 'Happy Mondays' and the other half is the start of the article. The picture that NME have included isnt a picture that shows theband fully, interpreting that NME used this picture because the audience should 'already' know who they are or be able to recognise the picture. The picture is also in black and white which connotates this it is an old band. At the top right of the page, a headline reading, 'The raggy ticket takeover' had been placed, this connotates that that years Glastonbury was a sell out. Between the two halves of the page they have turned a divider into a headline. Underneath this they have stated what stage the Happy Monday's was on, which is effective because this will give readers who was there that year a reminder on which stage they played on. Then underneath this the article starts, like the other magazines i have evaluated the first letter starts Bigger than any other word on the page in bold writing, this interview then goes onto the next page. A colour scheme has been kept between these two pages, but not with the front cover. The only colour on the double page spread is green, the background is white and all of the text is black. The rest of the interview takes over only half of the second page, just like the first page. The other half is taken over by 2 images to do with this specific band, and NME going onto explain the next band which is 'Verve'. Like on the first page NME have used the green banner to advertise the next band. This shows they have cared about keeping a colour scheme throughout the double page spread. Because of the several different bands on one double page spread, the repetition of the layout and the way each band has a number, it is clear to understand that because on the cover, they are advertising glastonbury, inside it's not only a double page spread it's more or less a full article of all the bands that have played there.

I-NME magazine is published and produced by IPC Media group, International Publishing Corporation.

I - NME beliefs are to get bands/artists to tell them their beliefs. They want the bands to tell them as much as possible.

A - NME targets their magazine at teenagers and young adults. Although this issue of the magazine is aimed at the older generation of adults as it's about past bands of the glastonbury festivals, on the other hand this is still aimed at teenagers and young adults because it's informing them about bands they would of probably liked if they were bands from their generation.

Market Research-NME (contents page)

L-Unlike most other magazines for the contents page, NME has used more imagery than text. At the very top of the page is a masthead reading 'Inside This Week' which is something different and more eye-catching than 'contents', the text is in black and bold writing. For the main story's inside NME they have put pictures to advertise them more, also including the page number and quotes from the interviews. The contents page for NME aims to specifically advertise the main storys, but also has a section almost in the centre of page reading 'Plus' which shows the extra articles and stories that are included in the magazine. Although the pictures on the contents page are set out in quite a dis-organized way it makes it look as if there is more going on because every space is filled with something. On the other hand, the contents page doesnt link with the front cover, the only clue that shows the contents page is part of this issue is because the word glastobury is seen as a headline, there is no colour scheme kept as the only colour on the contents page is from the photo's because the background is white and all of the text is black.

I-The institution for Nme magazine is IPC media.

I-The ideological views of NME's contents page is inform the reader about the main headlines which are inside the magazine.

A-The target audience would be teenagers and young adults.

R-NME has tried representing their target audience by making the contents page vibrant and full of relevant images and features, instead of filling the page with writing. The images of artists with less writing give the page a relaxed feeling.

Market Research-NME (front cover)

Just like the over magazines i have evaluated NME uses the same type of headline banner at the top of the page to advertise things in the magazine, but NME has made their banner much bigger so it's more noticable. The Banner is advertising that that this issue marks the 40th anniversary of glastonbury, which shows the magazine will have some sort of partnership with Glastonbury festival because they're the ones advertising. This is good for the magazine but it shows that it's worth reading due to the fact they have partnerships. The masthead which is under the banner headline, is alligned going from the left to the right taking over nearly half of the width of the page. The Masthead is in bold and very easy to read as the background picture of the page is dark blue and the masthead is white. Just above the masthead is the pirce and issue number of the magazine, but the barcode is at the bottom of the page in the right hand corner. This text is in small, white, italic writing. Then underneath the masthead, the definition of NME has been placed in small white writing too, which reads 'New Musical Express'. This informs the reader what NME is exactly about. On the opposite side of the page, on the right, a puff has been placed which tells you that inside the magazine they are giving you a preview of who they think will be the 'stars of Glastonbury' this year. The main headline of the cover is '40 years of Glastonbury' but reading this, as well as the banner headline at the top the reader will immediatley know that this issue of NME is all about glastonbury. This is good, but it is also a bad thing because they have more or less advertised the same thing twice when they could of used the top banner headline to advertise something else. The colour scheme of the front cover is white and orange with a dark blue background picture of a stadium with lots of different flags. The main headline of the cover is white as well as orange which links with the name as magazine as well as using the orange to make the page into something different. The word 'years' also overlaps the word '40' which is effective because it gives enough room for the word 'Glastonbury' as well as the picture. Behind the caption/banner headline, a green swirly/flower pattern has been placed which looks like confetti, therefore supporting celebrating the 40 year anniversary. Along the right hand side of the page a vertical banner headline has been placed advertising different artists with photo's of them it also tells you that features of these bands have been placed in the magazine. On the opposite side of the page, on the left, is another veritcal banner headline advertising bands inside but without photo's.

I-NME magazine is published by IPC Media, the International Publishing Corporation. They also publish for magazines, Now and Look.  They specialise in many different magazine areas like, leisure, men's and woman's lifestyle, entertainment and television.

I-NME magazine's beliefs are to get people's views and beliefs on Glastonbury and to get bands to tell them about all their beliefs.

A-NME aim their magazine at teenagers/young adults. Specifically because NME advertise many different festivals which tend to me an attraction for the younger generation.

R-NME magazine represents their magazine to indie rock bands. The front cover also gives off a sense of freedom due to the image, and the mention of festivals.

Market Research-Clash (double page spread)

Clash magazine's main interview is of Iggy and The Stooges

The first picture is the left hand side of the double page and is the actual interview of the band, and the second page is the right hand side and includes a picture of Iggy Pop. If it wasnt for the picture of Iggy Pop in the double page spread, it would be hard to link the story with the front cover because of the colours, none of them link with the original colour scheme of the front cover and the contents. Instead the colour scheme links more to Iggy Pop and the band its self because it uses black as the background with white and red writing. The page also links with just the picture of Iggy Pop on the front cover because black suggests darkness and evil and so does the picture because of the devil horns. The title of the first page is 'Raw power' which suggests that Iggy Pop's talent is 'raw' because a figure of him has been placed into the 'a' this picture is also the one shown on the second page. The title has been divided from the rest of the text, which is also in red which suggest danger. In between the title and text there has been a brief summary about Iggy Pop placed specifically for the readers who dont really know much about him. Like many articles, the first letter of the text has been dropped and put into a large bold letter. The letter is also the same red as the title which shows they've kept the colour scheme throughtout the double spread. On the other half of the double page spread, they have placed a picture of Iggy performing coverinng the full page, this is effective because it helps the readers identify him as a performer. It also represents his personality, because he's dancing and having a good time.

I-Clash magazine is produced and published by a dynamic independent media group. This group only publishes Clash magazine, therefore ensuring readers that the magazine will be worth reading because they have a company working on just one thing.

I-Clash magazine believe in getting all the information out of artists as possible to include in their stories, but they edit out inappropriate language so the magazine is suitable for a younger audience.

A-Clash Magazine is aimed from teenagers to the older generation of adults, this page shows this by producing a spread informing the generation about a music legend.

R-The double page spread represents a darker side to Iggy Pop and The Stooges, you can see this because of they colours they've used such as black and red. The Main photo of the article also shows Iggy dancing, which is not something people of his age would usually do a lot, this tells us that from the article Iggy wants to advertise that the older generation can still do the things that he does, no matter how old they are.

Market Research-Clash (contents page)

L-In the top right hand corner of the page, a headline reading 'Contents' has been placed, to show the readers exactly what this page is for. The text is also in pink which links with the cover, this shows they have kept the same colour scheme. Underneath this headline another picture of Iggy Pop has been placed to remind that the audience that he is the main focus of the magazine and about his interview, information on the interview has also been placed just underneath the picture, this connotates clash creating a cliffhanger. Alongside the cliffhanger, the page number of the interview has been placed in bold pink writing. This connotates that clash are trying their best to get you to read the interview. Five other main headlines have also been placed on the right hand side of the page underneath the photo advertising more stories inside. Two of these headlines have pink and green backgrounds, which shows, again, that they have kept the colour scheme. On the other hand, the other three headlines have pictures next to them, interpreting that these are maybe the more important stories/interviews. Underneath these headlines, they have placed a 'Clash review', which shows the latest recommended albums. Along the left hand side of the page is the actual contents, telling the reader what story/interview is on what page, again they have stuck to the same colour scheme. They have also split the contents into two sections. A 'regular' section and a 'features' section, this is good because the reader will know exactly what they're getting for they're money. At the very bottom of the page is another 'clash' section, which is 'clash fashion' this seperates the two different things included in the magazine, fashion and music.

I-The contents page  is created by a dymanic independant media group, to create a different type of contents page every month, one that will link with the front cover.

I-Because of the amount of different headlines clash have put on their contents page about different types of stories, it's easy to see that they believe in being as informative as they can in their magazine.

A-The magazine is aimed at teenagers to the older generation of adults, and i think that all of the aimed audience will want to read the contents page because of how big the magazine is, so they might only want to read certain parts of the magazine.

R-The contents page has a lot on it, this is because Clash magazine is a monthly issue, so they try to get as much into it as they can.

Market Research-Clash (front cover)

'Clash' magazine is a monthly magazine which focuses on many different music genre's, from Jay-z to Iggy Pop.

Starting from the very top of the page, they magazine has placed a banner headline, with two different points. One of the points is in white and the other is lime green, considering this isnt the most important thing on the cover they've made it stand out, because only a few other things on the page are white and lime green so it contrasts. Underneath the banner headline is the masthead 'clash' which is in a large, bold, easy to read font. The masthead stands out very well, because, like the white and lime green, the pink had been used for the colour of other things too. On the right, next to the masthead a puff has been placed, reading, 'Best for Less! £2.99', so even though the magazine is fairly cheap for a monthly magazine, by having an artist like Iggy Pop on the cover, it shows they can can afford celebrities such as him on the cover therefore showing they are a popular magazine, they puff is also used to advertise the price to the public to get more people to buy it. As ive just explained, Iggy pop is on the cover. The picture is a mid-shot with a grey back ground which takes up the whole of the front cover. In the photo, he looks very angry, he is also topless with his arms in the air and hands shaped like devil horns on his head, this could be a hint as to what the interview will be like inside, so it is more likely that the answers he's given are personal and about bad things he may have done. Underneath the main focus of Iggy Pop's face, on the bottom half of his body a bold headline reading 'Death, Drugs & David Bowie - Iggy and The stoogoes - The inside story of rock's ultimate hedonists' has been placed, this is to tell us that the man on the cover is Iggy Pop and he is the main focus of this months magazine. 'Death, Drugs & David Bowie', is in a white font in a pink banner around it, this will stand out for the readers. The 'Iggy and The Stooges', is a green for it to attract the readers. Underneath, 'The inside story of rock's ultimate hedonist', is in a white and all in capitals to show that he's actually 'rock's ultimate hedonist'. On each side of Iggy Pop, small headlines have been placed to inform the reader on other stories inside. All of the headlines are in a white font apart from certain words in two headlines, which are pink, this helps the page come together because the masthead is in pink also. On the right hand side on the page a big pink cross has been placed, this connotates that there is 'more' in the magazine.
At the bottom right of the page they have placed the price, the bar code and the URL. This is for the readers to find out more on the website, what month the magazine is, and how much it is.

I-Clash magazine is produced by the dynamic independent media group. The music company covers all genre's of music, but clash is the only magazine published within the company.

I-Clash magazine believes in giving people what they want in music, which is why they cover all music genre's. They also believe in just telling the audience relevent things and edit out bad press.

A-Clash magazine is aimed at many ages of people, from teenagers to older generations of adults, this is because they convey all genre's of music, and a different artist is on the cover every month, advertising to different people.

R-The Clash magazine represent any genre choice. There is also a lot of different things going on, on the cover which reflects that the inside interviews and informations are exactly the same.

Market Research-Kerrang! (double page spread)

In this issue of Kerrang magazine 'The King Blues' are on the front cover, therefore they are the magazine's main topic and have a double page spread.

L-On this double page spread, and also on many others, the first letter of the article is bigger than any other word and is in bold, this is to clearly show the reader where to start reading. The start of a new paragraph or topic has also had letters put in bold. The first page is the one with all of the writing about the band, and the one with just the image is the second page. The background colour of the page is black, with all the text in white, which helps it stand out. Whereas the background of the page with just a band member on is a dark grey, just like the front cover of the magazine. On the bottom left of the first page, Kerrang have placed three images, two are of the band members and the other is of the bands instruments. Each of these photo's have white borders around them which show that they belong on the page because the text is white also. On the other side of the page, the bottom right, there has been an arrow placed pointing to the next page, this is helpful because it lets the readers know that it isnt the end of the interview. The next page, is background mid-shot photo of the lead member of the band holding a dog. In the bottom left hand corner it tells you this and in the bottom right hand corner is a box with a yellow background with text inside telling you about this specific band member,i think this is good, because not only does the main part of the article tell you about the band as a whole, but you get to learn about the band members as individuals. At the top of the page on the right is a quote from the piece of text in the box, they have done this to advertise the box for you to want to read it. Throughout the front cover, contents page and the double page spread Kerrang have definitley kept their colour scheme all the way through, using mainly blacks, greys, whites, yellows and reds.

I-The whole magazine, obviously including the double page spread has been published by the Bauer Media group.

I-Kerrang believe in getting all the information of the band they can through using the interview, the stories of bands almost always include personal information about the band therefore showing that they dont mind asking any type of questions.

A-kerrangs target audience is 15 to 25 year olds, therefore keeping the the double page spread interesting for that specific age group. On the spread Kerrang have also included pictures of the band at their gig, obviously wanting to advertise the gigs for more people to go to them.

R-The double page spread includes a lot of writing showing that it's informative. Also the picture of the lead member holding a dog contrasts with the agressive picture on the front cover showing that they he will have a soft side to him even though he gives off a 'hard' impression.

Market Research- Kerrang! (contents page)

L-By looking at the contents page it's very easy to tell that it is linked to the front cover of the Kerrang magazine, obviously because it says 'Kerrand this week' but also because of the colour scheme. The colour Yellow dominates the main headline on the front cover, whereas the smaller headings are in in yellow on the contents page, i think this works well because it means the colour isnt over used. The colour red is also used, but in more of a similar way to the front cover, it doesnt dominate the page, it's used for the borders of things and small text, finally the colour black is used in the exact same way as the front cover, it's purpose is to be the background of everything to help the other colours stand out more, it also gives the magazine the 'rock/dark' feel it needs. On the other hand, a way in which you wouldnt be able to tell the contents page is linked to the front cover is because of the pictures. The biggest and main picture on the contents page is of 'slash', so you'd think that he would be on the front cover, but taking this into consideration i understand that there would be no point in advertising the cover story twice, so the contents page should advertise a different one to the front cover, which is exactly what Kerrang does. The contents page of this magazine is parted into two, the top half is the dominating picture of slash (^) which also has to small pictures on top of it showing two different stories inside, both of which have headlines telling you what pages they are on.The title 'Contents' is also at the top of the page in yellow bold text in the same font as the title 'Kerrang!' which the issue number of the magazine and date below it in white writing to stand out from the black background. The bottom half of the page is the actual 'contents', taking over the full length, but a small length of the left hand side of the page is a paragpraph written by the deputy editor, talking about this weeks magazine. The rest of the page includes one small photo, with a group of unknown people. And and a promotion of getting Kerrang delivered to your door.

I-The editor of this magazine is Daniel Lane, this has since changed, with Nichola Browne becoming the official editor in 2009.

I-The moral of the contents page is to inform the reader about everything that's inside the magazine.

A-The audience of the contents page is obviously just the general readers of 15 to 25 year olds, but i think the older generation will actually take notice of the contents page more.

R-The contents page show's neither a negative or positive outlook on the rest of the magazine, it just shows what is on each page.

Market Research-Kerrang!

L- The title of the magazine which is 'Kerrang!' is a banner headline with a white background and black text. The title stands out a lot due to the fact that the font is very original, it's sharp bubble writing, bold, with several white lines going through certain letters which helps it stands out. Above the title is a banner reading 'Lost Prophets & Papa Roach: New Album Exclusives!' which is also spread across the full width of the page and is also in capital letters to help it stand out, it contrasts with the title because instead of having a white background it has black background and instead of having black text it has white text.
The image on the front cover is of a band 'The King Blues' where only the two main members are in the photo. The image is a mid-shot of the two men with a grey background. One of the members is slightly closer to the camera in the photo with his head placed over the title of the magazine whereas the other man is further back in the photo with the top of his head behind the title of the magazine suggesting that the band member closer to the camera is the lead singer and front-man of the band. To advertise the band on the front cover and their story inside, there had been a banner placed in the very centre of the page which once again, is the full width of the page. The background of the banner is white and has jagged edges almost to look as if a piece of paper has been ripped. The name of the band is in Bold yellow text which stands out from the rest of the text on the page which is in black. Below the main headline it says 'Heartbreak, Betrayal and the truth...' this helps the story stand out to the reader by briefly giving hints on what it's about. Below the title of the band and the headline shows the rest of the picture of the two band members. Over-lapping the main (background) picture at the bottom on the right  is a cut out picture of 'Oli Sykes' only showing him and no background, across the picture is a quote of something he's said during the interview. On the left of that picture is another 3 pictures of 2 Bands and a lead singer of a band advertising the '5 free posters' included in this weeks magazine. Each image has the bands name over it in red bold writing, as well as the borders of the photo's being red, this helps it all fit together and stand out. Another advertising element  also on the front cover is underneath these 4 pictures, there is a white banner across the very bottom of the page reading 'PLUS!..' then several band names. The one other image of has been placed in the top left hand corner underneath the title of the magazine, once again it had the red bold writing and is advertising the return of a band member for a band. Parallel to his picture is a circular logo put on the front cover of every Kerrang Issue reading 'the UK'S BIGGEST Rock guide! over 800 gigs'. Unlike the rest of the smaller advertisements on the page, this has white writing on a black background with a red border which helps it stand out. The bar code of the magazine is in the very bottom right hand corner and has been turned horizontally. Over all i think the front cover is quite outstanding, everything fits together, the colour scheme is eye-catching.

I- The producer of the Kerrang magazine is The Bauer Media Group. They also produce other magazines such as Take A Break, T.V Choice and T.V Guide.

I- The ideological views of Kerrang Magazine are to get different bands to inform the readers upon many aspects of their life, such as their beliefs, their pasts and just generally what their life is like. Kerrang Magazine also advertises new bands helping them gain fans as well informing the audience on upcoming gigs.

A-The target audience for Kerrang readers is teenagers/young adults. Generally 15 to 25 year olds. Also the type of music that Kerrang adveritses is Rock and Metal.

R- The Kerrang Magazine represents quite a hardcore look into music, especially because it's rock and metal. However, most people who dont read the magazine would think this is negative because Rock tends to be dark, but it is the total opposite. Kerrang generally  just evaluates music and bands like any other music magazine.

Identify Genre and explain choice

I have decided that the genre of my magazine is going to be mainly Rock, but with also similar genre stories such as pop-rock and alternative rock. I have chosen this genre because this is the type of music i generally listen to and i think i could do a good job of creating a magazine of this genre because i understand what people my age would want to see in this type of magazine.

LIIAR interpretation of the brief

L-The camera angle which will be most effective for the product would probably be a mid-shot for the front cover, i think this because with a mid-shot the camera is close but not too close to the face so you still feel the impact of eye contact. The colour schemes that i would mostly likely stick to are blacks, whites and greys, but then a bold colour for each heading on every different page to make the page individually stand out.

I- I dont think i would want my magazine to be produced for an existing publisher. I want it to be totally new and individual. But then of course because it's a music magazine and there are already several music magazines being published it's likely that there will be some similarities with mine and other magazines. The thing that i would do to make my magazine different is identify things in other magazines which i would see as weaknesses then try my best to make them better for the reason that i might maybe add something like that in my magzine.

I-The message that i would like to get across to my targer audience is to just generally inform them about the music in which my genre is involved with. I want the reader to be able to look at the magazine cover and know instantly whether they would buy it or not, i think it's important to show the genre by using the front cover and i will do my best to do so.

A-The aim is for my magazine to be targeted at an audience of roughly, 15 to 25 year olds. I have chosen these ages because obviously i am a part of that category so i have a good idea on what people that age would like to see in a magazine.

R- i would preferably like the stories inside my magazine to all be presented in a positive way and just generally broadcast the events of the music industry within my genre. But if this was a real magazine, and if i wasnt allowed to choose the stories that were going to be inside, then it would just be like any other magazine, in other words, a publishers job isnt to just put the story's they like inside, it's to generally tell the public about whats going on, whether it's positive or negative.

The Brief

Following the preliminay exercise of having to create a front cover and contents page for a college magazine, i have now been given the main task of creating a front cover, a contents page and a double page spread of a new music magazine which has to be my own original ideas.
