Evaluation
For the preliminary exercise i have been asked to create a college magazine front cover and contents page. We had to come up with a name for the magazine, take a medium close-up of a student for the front cover as well as take other pictures to either add on the front cover or put on the contents page.
Overall, i am happy with my front cover, it's looks professional and i have included everything which i was supposed to include. I used a masthead at the top as well as sub-headings placed appropriately around the main picture, and used the college's logo. Also, throughout the texts on the front cover and contents page i have stuck with the college colours, of purple and green. I came up with the name 'Wyke Nation' because i didnt want something boring like 'Wyke College Magazine', also Wyke Nation sounds catchy and fun, something that would stand out to students.
To create my front cover i used photoshop, then to create my contents page i used publisher. I took many photo's for the magazine but have only ended up using four of them, the main image in the front cover and three smaller images on the contents page. The only problems i had with the photo's is that the main image i wanted to use, the girl had red-eyes on it so i had to edit them, which took quite a bit of time to make them look natural.
Im not quite sure what sort of grade i'll get for my magazine, im hoping at least a C. I'm proud of it, but i honestly think i could of put more imagination, time and effort into it.

After deciding the things that were actually going on my contents page, i realised that to make them stand out more and seem more interesting i needed to put a phrase for them. So these are what i came up with...

On the contents page i have decided on including some of the pictures of around the college which i have taken myself, and i will again, like the front cover, be using the Wyke colours which are green and purple. I want the magazine to have around 25 pages, so i have come up with the contents page of what pages the stories will be on.

College Magazine Name
From the possible names that i made, i have decided that i am going to name my magazine 'Wyke Nation'. I have chosen the name because it sounds more professional and rememberable than any of the other names. It also sounds like something college students would buy, just because of the name. It's not something stupid, but it's not academic at the same time, so it stands out to students.
Front Cover
For the front cover of my magazine i have decided on using my friend Amy Miller to model for me. The background of the shot is going to be plain white with Amy stood in front. There is no specific reason on why i have just chosen one person to be on the cover, or why it's going to be a female. But if i was to actually create a magazine for my college i would think it'd be a good idea to change the cover to a different every week.
Colours
For the magazine cover and contents page i wanted to keep using the same colours throughout. I also wanted to use the colours of Wyke which are purple and green so it links with the actual college, white, grey and black will also be used. Instead of just using any purple and green ive got the exact colours, here they are...
Green
Hue:50
Sat:150
Lum:124
Red:172
Green:209
Blue:55
Purple
Hue:177
Sat:85
Lum:92
Red:92
Green:63
Blue:132
Examples of names
For my college magazine i was told not to just call it 'Wyke' and come up with something more creative. So here are some examples of a possible name...
Wyke Times
Wyke In A Week
Wyke Nation
Wyke State
Wyke Weekly
Wyke Times
Wyke In A Week
Wyke Nation
Wyke State
Wyke Weekly

Planning 1
I have decided that i want my college magazine to be a magazine that the whole college can read, where it doesnt just focus on a certain aspect.
possible photo's for the contents page
I have not yet decided on what i want the front cover of my magazine to be, but i have decided that on my contents page i want some pictures of things around the college. Here are some of the pictures i have taken..
LIIAR analysis of second college Magazine
Language-I think the language of this magazine is a lot better than the first one, there is also a lot more information especially on the contents page. Unlike the first magazine this one doesnt have a lot of pointless texts on the frontcover. The title of the magazine stands out a lot, and is eye-catching. The headings and fonts are eye-catching too, which helps the cover all fit together and not look messy.
Institution-The grimsby institute magazine, is very noticably for the whole college, and doesnt just focus on one aspect.
Ideology-I think this magazine looks quite proffesional, the layout has been carefully thought out and looks as if they spent a reasonable amount of time on it. The front cover stands out a lot anyway because of the fact that its an animation, and not many magazines have a front cover like that, but it also stands out because of the colours, which are blue, grey and white, they work well together. Unfortunatly a colour scheme hasnt been kept throughout the whole magazine so it doesnt give it much structure as a magazine as a whole. What i like about the contents page is the fact that they have kept the whole point of the readers being students in mind, it looks like any other teenage magazine and not boring. They've also included some advertisements which are aimed at students and include pictures of students so it looks appealing.
Audience-I think the creators of the magazine have definitley succeeded in meeting their target audience of college students. I looks very different from any other magazine so people are most likely to notice it and want to read it. It's also not just focused on a certain part of the college, it focusses on the college as a whole, like the first college magazine i analyzed. But unlike the other magazine you can easily tell that magazine will focus on the WHOLE college just by looking at the front cover because it doesnt highlight a particular thing.
Repesentation-I think the representation of the magazine is very organised. It's thoughtfully set to stand out, and has the right colours to do so. The only thing i dont really like about the front cover and think is irrelavant is the image of the girl in the bottom right hand corner of the page. It looks sort of pointless and out of place. It just doesnt look very good putting an animated photo with a normal photo.

LIIAR analysis of the first college magazine
'Student Life' magazine.
Language-I dont think the texts on the front cover of this magazine are eye-catching or effective at all. Everything looks so plain, the fonts are all very similar, and the name of the magazine which is usually supposed to be the main focal point of the page is no different from any of the other headings, so it makes the magazine not very noticable. The title on the contents page stands out a little more, but it's still just boring. There are also no other headings on the contents page other than the actual contents, so its not very interesting to look at.
Institution-The students have created the magazine, for the students, to inform them about their college. This is very noticable, it doesnt look very proffesional and doesnt stand out.
Ideology- The image that has been used on the front cover, has a heading over it letting you know that it's a picture of some students in berlin on a trip. It also tells you that there is a story about the berlin trip inside the magazine and what page it is on. I dont think this is very suitable or proffesional because it doesnt give the magazine any structure. Usually magazine's, uncluding college and school magazines have some sort of recurring stories them, which gives the the magazine a certain target audience. But this magazine, doesnt give you any sort of clue on whether the magazine is about the college as a whole or just a certain subject within the college.
Audience-As ive already mentioned, the magazine doesnt seem to stand out and represent any target audience. Because of image on the front of this issue you could maybe think it was a magazine just focussing on the trips that happen in the college, but then on the contents page it tells you that there any many other stories within the magazine so it might just be for everyone. I think a college magazine for everyone at the college is a good idea, but they should of put a little more thought into their main cover image.
Representation-Over all i dont think the representation of the magazine is very good, especially because the front cover is only black and white, it just doesnt stand out at all. The contents is not as bad because they've added green, they've also used black and white as the background though which shows they thought about keeping a certain layout throughtout the magazine. One thing i also dont like about the front cover is that, at the bottom of the page they've done some references saying what page some stories are on inside the magazine, i dont think this was a very good idea, as they've just repeated it on the contents page, i think this is the result of not putting much thought into their work, they've probably just added the page references on the front cover because they didnt spend much time planning on putting something else, so it was sort of like a last minute resort.
