LIIAR analysis of the first college magazine

'Student Life' magazine.


Language-I dont think the texts on the front cover of this magazine are eye-catching or effective at all. Everything looks so plain, the fonts are all very similar, and the name of the magazine which is usually supposed to be the main focal point of the page is no different from any of the other headings, so it makes the magazine not very noticable. The title on the contents page stands out a little more, but it's still just boring. There are also no other headings on the contents page other than the actual contents, so its not very interesting to look at.




Institution-The students have created the magazine, for the students, to inform them about their college. This is very noticable, it doesnt look very proffesional and doesnt stand out.


Ideology- The image that has been used on the front cover, has a heading over it letting you know that it's a picture of some students in berlin on a trip. It also tells you that there is a story about the berlin trip inside the magazine and what page it is on. I dont think this is very suitable or proffesional because it doesnt give the magazine any structure. Usually magazine's, uncluding college and school magazines have some sort of recurring stories them, which gives the the magazine a certain target audience. But this magazine, doesnt give you any sort of clue on whether the magazine is about the college as a whole or just a certain subject within the college.


Audience-As ive already mentioned, the magazine doesnt seem to stand out and represent any target audience. Because of image on the front of this issue you could maybe think it was a magazine just focussing on the trips that happen in the college, but then on the contents page it tells you that there any many other stories within the magazine so it might just be for everyone. I think a college magazine for everyone at the college is a good idea, but they should of put a little more thought into their main cover image.


Representation-Over all i dont think the representation of the magazine is very good, especially because the front cover is only black and white, it just doesnt stand out at all. The contents is not as bad because they've added green, they've also used black and white as the background though which shows they thought about keeping a certain layout throughtout the magazine. One thing i also dont like about the front cover is that, at the bottom of the page they've done some references saying what page some stories are on inside the magazine, i dont think this was a very good idea, as they've just repeated it on the contents page, i think this is the result of not putting much thought into their work, they've probably just added the page references on the front cover because they didnt spend much time planning on putting something else, so it was sort of like a last minute resort.
